Due to the advancement in our knowledge of the duration of activity of vaccines, we are now extending the dosing intervals for many vaccines to a 2-3 year timeframe. The problem we now face as clinicians, due to the increased time between vaccines, is that pet owners often neglect their pet’s routine annual physical exam. It seems that unless an illness or injury arises in the years between vaccinations, some patients are not being seen for 2-3 years. In my recent reading in the August 2010 DVM magazine, I came across a newer product that I think may be a better alternative to the big two topical flea/tick treatments most of us have been using for years. Most pet owners have heard of the big two Frontline Plus, and K9 Advantix, but now Vectra 3D has seemingly surpassed these products in their spectrum of coverage for our pets. Cerenia is touted by its manufacturer, Pfizer, as a medication which allows pet owners to travel by car with their dogs, without the unpleasant experience of a pet vomiting due to motion sickness. Motion sickness is said to affect 1 in 6 dogs, this medication has been purported to have an effectiveness rate of 93% (reference). So, now owners do not have to suffer with pangs of guilt from having to leave their pets behind with sitters or in a kennel.
